Planet Dive: Exploring Contextual Games
Project Description
Planet Dive is an action game for the Android platform. Originally spanning from a design project, it began to evolve into an early exploration of contextual games. That is, games whose parameters evolve according to information that is specific to the players context. Unlike AR games, which intend to embed a virtual reality on your physical reality to augment the gaming experience, contextual games embed your physical reality within the game's parameters. In Planet Dive, you take the role of a harvester, a miner from the future that collects resources from the core of planets. During a harvesting operation, a laser drills a path to the center of the harvested planet, and the miner jumps down the rabbit hole to collect the goods. Your task is to control the miner and succesfully complete the dive by avoiding any obstacles on your way down. Planet Dive's game mechanics loosely incorporate the user's context by changing the enemies that appear throughout the level according to the time of day, month, temperature, and other environmental factors. The falling speed of the diver is also affected by the speed of the player in the real world.
